Psaltery - All Psalteries are not the same.
The Waynie Compact model is, without question, the most innovative design for the bowed
psaltery since its inception in the late 1940's. I call it the Compact
because of it's unique design. The compact, which was designed and developed by me, is a totally different approach
to the instrument. It is easier and faster to play since the travel to
sharps and flats is around three inches straight across the instrument.
In the traditional triangle model, there is a much greater separation from side
to side. All my Psalteries are handcrafted by me, entirely from all natural
hardwoods. I do not use veneers for fear of separation with time and high
humidity levels. Even the rosettes are hardwood. There isn't one piece of
plywood in my instruments. I use many exotic hardwoods from several
continents and select the cuts for the best possible sound. These compact
psalteries are not only beautiful, they have a wonderful voice.
Psalteries with the Waynie mark are easier to hold and to play. They all have a quarter inch brass insert allowing them to be mounted on a standard camera tripod for easy playing while using one, two or three bows. The bows have a fifteen inch length of horse hair for long draws. Spacing between the note pins is an equal one inch apart. Any variation of this makes playing more difficult. They are strung with individual strings. Two notes per string on some instruments makes it difficult to tune.
